How Does Solar Tracker Work?

A good way to maximize the output of a solar PV system is to mount it on a solar tracker . Solar trackers can significantly increase the power output of a photovoltaic system, allowing you to earn more from the feed-in tariff. However, as discussed in this article, the economics of solar trackers are more suitable for large installations, and in fact rely more on the level of on-grid tariff assistance provided by geographic location. What is a solar tracker? A solar tracker is a device that tracks the sun through the sky during the day, exposing your photovoltaic cells to more sunlight and generating more electricity. This is because PV cells work best when facing the sun directly. As the Earth's tilt relative to the Sun changes, the angle of the Sun in the sky changes throughout the year. In the summer, the sun is high in the sky and longer in the sky as it passes longer arc lengths. In winter, the sun is lower in the sky, and when it passes through a shorter arc, the time a

Solar-Powered Water Pump System for Livestock

While it is not uncommon for farmers and ranchers to have their animals drink from creeks, ponds or other surface water sources, many are turning to alternatives to providing drinking water for livestock. The easy-to-install solar water pump is a very reliable way to pump water from the well to the ground storage tank, or from the surface to the high altitude. Some government agencies even provide cash grants to farmers and ranchers if they agree to graze from nearby creeks and streams and install alternative water supplies, such as wells using solar pumping methods. Solar pump system components The most basic forms of solar pumps include small direct current (DC) solar pumps, pump controllers, one or more solar modules, replacement well caps, wires and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes. Anyone who can use a screwdriver and a pipe wrench should be able to assemble a solar pump kit. These systems are very basic. They do not require a power inverter or battery, and it is safer to u

What is the Difference Between Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline Solar Panels?

What is the Difference Between Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline Solar Panels? Solar panels take advantage of a powerful yet free energy source - the sun. In a single hour the sun transmits more energy to the earth's surface than the world uses in a year. Our guide outlines how you can use solar panels to make use of this free source of energy to generate electricity and hot water for you home. Types of solar panels The two main types of active solar panel systems are Monocrystalline Panels ,Polycrsytalline Panels (also known as multicrystalline) The differences between these two types of solar panels relate to the manufacturing process rather than product characteristics. Monocrystalline solar cells are produced from a single crystal of silicon while polycrystalline solar cells are produced from a piece of silicon consisting of many crystals. Monocrystalline Panels The solar cells in monocrystalline panels are slices cut from pure drawn crystalline silicon bars. The en

How big should your Off-Grid system be?

If you are moving from a utility-connected home in the 'burbs' to an off-grid home in the boonies, you will have the opportunity (perhaps necessity) of downsizing your electricity usage. In order to calculate how large your home power system needs to be,  run the calculator to check . Compare and adjust your plans according to your budget and lifestyle. Please also refer to the daily sun hours in USA if you are USA customers, other customers from outside the coutries, please check the daily sun hours in your coutry.  Run the  System Sizing Calculator   first with numbers from your current electricity usage. You can aslo refer to  the eletric appliance power consumption chart (PDF) , The daily energy values listed in the PDF file are for the most efficient units in their class and the information was obtained from Consumer Guide to Home and the General Electric website. Use the power consumption to calculate the power you will need.  These figures are approximate an

How do solar cells work?

Solar (or photovoltaic) cells convert the sun’s energy into electricity. they rely on the the photoelectric effect: the ability of matter to emit electrons when a light is shone on it. The solar cells are made of silicon and other materials which made up of at least 2 semi-conductor layers, one layer called P layer with extra electrons, another is called N layer missing equivalent electrons.  When the sun shines on the solar cells, free electrons from the P layer flow to N layer. Then it forms the electrons current. When the sun shines on the solar cells, the sun will realize photons, which contains sun energy. Many of the photons are reflected, pass right through, or absorbed by the solar cell. As these  hit the silicon atoms of the solar cell, they transfer their energy to loose electrons, knocking them clean off the atoms. The photons could be compared to the white ball in a game of pool, which passes on its energy to the coloured balls it strikes. E lectrons are freed f

Wind Energy

Wind Energy Wind is a form of solar energy . Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the anomaly of the earth's surface, and rotation of the earth. Wind flow patterns are modified by the earth's terrain, bodies of water, and vegetative cover. This wind flow, or motion energy, when "harvested" by windturbines , can be used to generate electricity . Societies have taken advantage of wind power for thousands of years. The first known use was in 5000 BC when people used yacht to sail the Nile River. Persians had already been using windmills for 400 years by 900 AD in order to pump water and grind grain. Windmills may have even been developed in China before 1 AD, but the earliest written documentation comes from 1219. Cretans were using "literally hundreds of sail-rotor windmills to pump water for crops and livestock." Wind Energy Sources Today, people are realizing that wind power "is one of the most promis
